Formula One ramblings....

What will remain of Formula One now?? From the next season, maybe, there will be a breakaway series contested by major players like Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, BMW Sauber, Brawn GP, and other contenders like Red Bull Racing, Toyota and Toro Rosso. With the seemingly inevitable split due to take place in 2010, it will become almost inconceivable to think of F1 in a true sporting sense.

With huge stacks of money and budget caps becoming the order of the day, the sport has to cut costs to survive in the present world, where it has come under increasing criticism by green and environmental groups. I would like the world to go green, I would prefer less pollution. I would like clear skies and a bit of sunshine. But watching one of the most fascinating sports being pulled apart at the seams is heart-breaking for a fanatic like me.

Where will I get the excitement of red-yellow-blue-silver-grey-black cars revving along tarmac-like circuits at speeds of 320 mph? Where will I find the fascination of watching drivers overtake each other on hairpin bends or super-fast chicanes? I will have to forego moments when I can bite off my fingernails, praying for the pit crew not to take a lot of time, while pumping in the right amount of fuel into the car at the same time, AND letting their man off in time so he can still be in the lead? F1 will not be the same with a two-tier competition, especially with Ferrari threatening to pull out. I have been a Ferrari supporter for as long as I remember, ever since I started watching the sport (which was in 1999). Primarily because of Michael Schumacher, I became a life-long supporter of the shining scarlet cars, embossed with the labels of Shell and Bridgestone and Marlboro. And now with the most popular team in F1 planning not to contest the next season's championship, it will come as a shock and heartache to millions of Scuderia fans across the world. The decision has not been confirmed yet. Official news is being eagerly awaited. It is the final day today to file in for the next season. I am hoping Max Mosley blinks. To save the sport. To let Ferrari race. To see another astonishing season as hugely-talented drivers slug it out again to lift the gleaming trophies. To watch the fans cheer and scream and shout for their idols. To watch team strategies unfold correctly or incorrectly. To watch perfectly-timed pit stops. To see cars veering off the track and crashing into a mist of gravel. To watch them pile up on top of each other in a major accident. To keep the legacy of great champions alive. Fangio, Ascari, Hill, Piquet, Prost, Senna and Schumacher are watching.
