The Mirror Lies
Shower,
dust down clean,
baby powder
for the soft, fresh smell.
You do your hair,
straighten it,
sprinkle on some setting spray.
You put on kajal,
elegant lines curving outwards,
smokiness on the lids.
Gloss on the lips
for that just-kissed look.
You peep into the mirror,
you like what you see,
You manage a smile,
flick back your hair,
twirl around
to let the skirt flow
and make you feel dainty.
You take a selfie,
heart pounding,
lips smiling,
excited.
Words break the heart,
wipe off that smile.
Once again,
it hasn't been good enough,
not like the other girls,
not perfect,
not shining and
worthy to be shown off.
You come home,
look into the mirror.
Why did you lie?
you ask.
I did not, it says,
it was a figment
of your imagination.
Have you even
looked at yourself,
it cackles.
One punch,
and there is blood,
a lot of it,
as the liar lies
on the floor,
broken, shattered.
Just like me.
