Random random....

Mo and Mike. Two souls caught in one of the most testing things that man could conceive --- a long-distance relationship. Fraught with anxiety and nerves and a possibility of everything going wrong, and that could go wrong.

This is what it is like when they finally meet.

August 21, Mo has a flight to catch. To Mumbai. That’s where he lives and works. The countdown starts a month in advance. They are extremely excited to meet each other. Finally. After a long time. Maybe two months, maybe six, who knows? It could be anything.

A week before, nerves set in. Mo is worried. “Will he still like me? Will he love me the same as before?” Some familiar questions that worry her every time she sets out to meet him. Every day, as well. Distance doesn’t help. Not being able to talk to him everyday doesn’t, either.

You see, the dynamics of their relationship are very, very different from the normal ones. They don’t talk each day. Sometimes they might not talk for a week. Mike’s a busy man. He’s a professional car racer, only 22. Trying to make it into the big league, with the bigger names. He needs money, sponsors; Mike needs to make a name for himself. This is what keeps him on his toes all the time. Working, testing, in contact with engineers and workers, busy, busy, busy --- every single day. And when he gets time, he sleeps. He needs to recharge his batteries for the next day, so he can perform better, do a more clinical job. Mo doesn’t necessarily like it, but tries to understand. She tries not to ask him for communication, she doesn’t want to bother him. But it’s eating her inside out. Anyway, back to the point.

It’s the last night together, the most painful, the most depressing. This is the night when both Mo and Mike just lie back and do nothing. Count the hours, then the minutes, then seconds. A song plays on in a loop in Mo’s head. A duet by LeAnn Rimes and Ronan Keating. ‘We’ve got tonight, who needs tomorrow, let’s make it last, let’s find a way, turn out the lights, come take my hand now, we’ve got tonight baby, why don’t you stay. We’ve got tonight baby, why don’t you stay…..’ She wants to sing it for Mike, while strumming her guitar. But she doesn’t have the courage. She cannot sing out loud while he’s watching her. She thinks he might laugh. And so, Mo lets it go.

She doesn’t know what’s going on inside Mike’s head. If he is thinking of her, this last night, the time they spent, the life they can make together. Maybe he has already switched off and let the cars take over. Whatever it is, she is happy for him. For the life he has created for himself there. Both of them remain quiet, not willing to talk, as if conversation will somehow cut short their precious time together.

She lies back, nestling in his strong arms. He pulls her closer and she breathes in his delicious scent, something she wants to remember him by. They lie in that position for a long time, Mo with her face buried in his chest, Mike staring up at the dark ceiling.

Random things and memories and all that jazz.....
